The setup: Your typical zombie survival scenario EXCEPT for the fact that the focus is not on actually killing zombies. Much like The Walking Dead comics, this mod is primarily about human interaction/emotion.

When you start off you have a pistol with a couple mags, some water and a can of beans. You have no map/compass and have no idea where you are. Naturally, food, weapons and other useful items are scarce, so scavenging/hunting/trading is the only way to survive.

The stakes: You can only play one character at a time and death for each character you play is permanent. If you've survived for weeks out in the wilderness (all of your character's items/info are saved to a master server), only to be shot in the head by a marauding bandit player, that character is gone forever. When you respawn, you will start a new character.

Player interaction: Most of your time in DayZ will be spent building relationships and deciding who to trust. Some people want to live in a friendly community, some will do whatever it takes to survive (even if that means killing you for a can of beans because they were on the verge of starvation) and some just want to watch the world burn. I've seen small groups of friendly survivors get robbed by masked bandits and used as zombie bait/distraction. I've seen people get murdered for a can of Coke. I've seen people trust others, only to be shot in the back and stripped bare as they lay bleeding on the ground. This is the reality that DayZ presents.

I just joined a server. Was doing ok, found some guns, had 15 zombie kills. I decided to climb up a tower and make use of a new long range gun I found. Saw some dude getting ass raped by some zombies in a field, so I assisted. Next thing I know all those bitch started to come after me and climb up the tower. I started popping them in the head as they crest over the ladder for instakills and next thing I know someone is shooting me. Two shot later I am dead from a person and not a zombie. When I died I had almost 30 zombie kills. Mother fuckers.

pretty much. There are only two file types that are in the rar files. just make sure they're in the addons folder and you're good to go. You'll know if it worked if you see "Arma 2 @DayZ " at the menu screen on the right hand side.

"I've been playing since around 1.2, and it really is something else. I have so many crazy stories and experiences from my travels in Chernarus I almost feel like writing a book.

Once, I logged on in the middle of the night. During my previous sessions I had been making my way through the countryside to what I was told was a town ripe for the picking, travelling with a friend who was now fast asleep. I decide to take a shortcut through a small village, which turned out to be a terrible decision - it was full of zombies.

So there I was, being chased along the road by a dozen zombies for what must've been half an hour, when I see a flare in the distance. It looks like it's on the roof of a building, but it's hard to tell from this distance. I stop running for a second to announce that I'm in need of help, during which time I'm struck in the face and start bleeding. Almost immediately I get a reply - "No problem, come on over". Slowly losing blood, I make my way over and find that it is indeed a building (and a pretty big one, at that). I climb a few flights of stairs, but see no entrance to the roof. Frantically searching, I hear a moan. They're catching up. Suddenly, I hear the flick of lighter, followed by a blinding red light - the guy drops a flare down, revealing the ladder that was hiding behind a stack of crates. I'm struck once again while I'm putting away my mostly-empty revolver. My vision darkens as I climb, gunshots echoing as my newfound companion covers my escape.

The gunshots stop as I finally reach the top. I'm safe. He points me towards a pile of ammo and we chat for a bit while he gives me a transfusion. In the first downtime I've had in quite some time, I realize how incredibly hungry and thirsty I am. I ask if he has anything to eat, to which he replies with a laugh, "You too, eh?"

A scream echoes in the distance. Blam. Blamblam. Another scream - no shots this time, though. I look toward the horizon, deeper into the city where I see a figure basking in the faint light of a distant flare. It's another survivor, and it looks like he's in trouble. Without hesitation, my savior whips out he rifle and, after adjusting his zero, takes aim and fires. The shots hit and the zombie goes down, as expected. What we didn't expect, though, was the massive horde that proceeded to sprint through the light towards us. Shit.

We decide that it'd be a waste of resources to try and take them out from all the way over there, so we wait for them to get closer. We manage to pick off a few before they round the corner of the courtyard and escape our line of sight, which uses up the majority of our remaining ammunition. Their cries now louder than ever, we figure they're probably in the building. "We fight to the end!", he says. No disagreements here. While waiting for death to shamble up the stairs, we reminisce about how we first met - oh, it seems like only yesterday! We expend the rest of our ammo on the first few to climb the ladder, though there are many still filing up the stairs.

We back as far away from the entrance as we can and wait. Guns as empty as our stomachs (and my veins), we watch as the first zombie steps floor on the roof. The chat was unusually dead, so it wasn't hard to see the message in my peripheral vision - "Goodbye, battle-brother. We made a hell of a team." I turn my head as he takes a single step and leaps off the edge.

me and dan had a painful session before. :lol: wasn't too bad aside from using communicating through fucking PM's on steam since neither of us knew the controls or had a vent server :lol:

anyways so about that stand off i had :lol:

I'm already terrified since it's night time, i'm all alone and i don't know fuck from the controls of this game. I some how make my way down the shore to this small town that seems to be deserted. But sure enough soon as i get near on of the backyards of a house i see immediately across the street 2 zeds sitting in a doorway just waiting to be aroused. So i say "fuck it" and just walk right back out of there to see if maybe some other buildings further along aren't "occupied". First i see some fenced in circuit breaker and a single room building with a door that seems oddly lit as if to draw unnecessary attention to itself. I cannot however find a way in so i abort. As im walking away in frustration i see before me an air field. Now by this time dusk that was so helpful in leading me around with a carefree wonder has turned to blackness.

I take cover and look ahead to see if anyone is moving on the airfield and luckily i don't see a single soul, alive or dead. Time to find out if there are any goodies on this military airbase for the taking. One hangar, nothing. Second hangar, possible zombie inside, do not want, proceed to the radar tower. Now mind you the runway was filled with the bodies of what appeared to be zombies dressed in military garb. Making my way up the stairs of the radar tower i don't see any bodies a just a few scattered items. In the control room i find an AK74, fuck yes, 2 clips to go with it. Just after i pick it up i turn around toward the staircase leading down and BAM! A raider standing right 1m away at the foot of the stairs. I panicked and shot a clip into his with my makarov landing 2-3 shots. The raider takes off and disappears into the darkness leaving me shitting my pants lying on the floor with my AK out waiting for him to come back up to try and get me. Nothing is said between either of us (had no idea how to global chat at that time). Minutes pass by and feel like hours, my brother is telling me to go down the open staircase which would be obvious death if he were waiting out of sight behind the stairs. So that wasn't an option, I ran out onto the catwalk around the outside of the control room to see if there was any other way to get to me and sure enough i spot a ladder.

After seeing the ladder i ran back into the control room and onto the floor, positioning myself so i could shoot either the doorway into the control room from the catwalk or the staircase leading downstairs. Again, minutes feel like hours as the slowly tick by, silence. Suddenly i realize 2 points are gonna be hard for my noob ass to cover so i remember seeing a ladder to go onto the roof of the control room, i make the decision to run for it. Just as i make to to the top and lie down a road flare goes off in the room i was just in. Panicking once again i search the runway for the bandit, nothing, the field i came across to get to the air field, nothing. I make the choice to go down the ladder again to see if he's in the control room (figure iv'e got nothing to lose at that point. Turn around and get up, go for the ladder and there he is, standing there on the ground looking right up at me. I try to fire some rounds into him but he downs me in 1 shot. Game over. or so i thought :lol:

i quickly respawned a ran back, figured at the very least i could get some stuff in hopes that the guy just took my shit and bounced leaving some other stuff behind. I arrive and the first thing i see at the foot of the ladder to the control tower catwalk is the dude, dead. Guess he must have fallen or glitched or something but that fucker was DEAD :lol: took all his shit (AK74 + 3 mags, some food, water, bandages..etc) pretty good haul. Then i climb up to see if anything is left on my body and he hadn't even touched it! Took all my stuff back (that i could carry) and waited for someone to join up with so i didn't waste this decent start i had for myself.


and then dan came :lol: we had a good run. till you didn't use your bandages and bled out, only to have me turn into a bandit because i put you out of your misery :lol: although i did find a g17 with a tac light and binoculars. I think i might also play on hardcore servers sicne that removes the names display. that shit gives people away too easily and defeats the point of hiding in the woods and brush. and without vent this game is fucking terrifying :lol:

As far as I know, you can't run the mod with a pirated copy. You HAVE to at least buy the Combined Ops expansion which is like $16.

I'm going to write a basic newbie guide here just because here is a good place to put it.

Always keep checking the Dayz Download page before you play because there has probably been an update.

On the server list click Filter and write "Dayz" in the mission to filter all the other stuff out. If everywhere is full just hammer Spacebar until you get in.

When you load up a level, just click OK in the bottom right hand corner and whenever you can click that click it and you'll eventually end up in the game. This might take 5 seconds, it might take 10 minutes.

Upon first loading of the game, immediately press Z to go prone so you can hide whilst you get familiar with the controls.

Now press Enter on the numpad side (not sure if the main enter works) and you should go in to 3rd person view which is what I use most of the time. If it doesn't you're on a hardcore server. Pressing it again will put you back in to 1st person mode.

Now scroll the mousewheel, you'll notice that you get some options. To cancel these options you'll want to right click. If you left or middle click you will use whatever option is highlighted. You only want to eat and drink your supplies when the icons on the bottom left are red and flashing.

The Icons on the bottom left show Humanity status (don't worry about this one), Drink, Blood and Food. Drink when the drink is red and flashing, same for food. I don't see any reason to drink or eat before this happens unless you find tons of supplies. If your blood has a + sign flashing in it you need to bandage. You can do this by using the mousewheel and it will give you the option when you need to do it. It won't come up if you're not bleeding or in front of someone who is. Eating food will replenish blood count as does a blood transfusion if you find a pack when scavenging. You start with 12000 and when you get low you'll die.

Now press F, this cycles between your weapons and lights. You'll see it changing in the top right. If you pick up another gun like a shotgun and want to use that, use the mouse wheel to select the right gun. F seems to cycle between your selected gun and say flares.

R reloads. You can try this now, it'll reload even when you have a full clip and won't lose any bullets. Don't start shooting, you hardly have any ammo and the sound will attract zombies and other players.

Now press G. This is your backpack. Your backpack is super confusing. There are slots in there that will only fill up when you find that item, like binoculars and a compass so don't worry about those. Look to where the beans and flares are, that's your supplies bit. All large weapon stuff, flares, lights, pain relief and food goes in here. You only have a few slots! Now look to the bandages and pistol ammo, this is your er bandage and pistol ammo bit... If it gets full I'd recommend 2 bandages and the rest pistol ammo -OR- all ammo and put your bandages in your backpack, which you get to by clicking on the backpack then clicking the open backpack icon. This will now bring you to another inventory that has your backpack contents. It's best to think of the main G inventory as your person, and the backpack as your backpack. You can move items to and from this and your person, or bypass your person and put it straight in to the backpack. I think that if say a bandage is in your backpack you can't use it until it's on your person but that's just a hunch, I haven't tested it.

If you find some loot or a body, look on it and you'll see a green icon appear in your sights looking like a gun with some ammo. Middle click (the mouse wheel) on it and it'll bring up your inventory. What's this? They have all my stuff! No, the inventory system is retarded and it mixes all your stuff with the stuff you want to pick up. How do you know what's your's and what's on the floor? The floor stuff will have a number on the left of it. No number, its all your stuff. You'll get used to this don't worry if it's confusing for now. You can also go straight to your backpack and put all the stuff in there.

You can find new backpacks around occasionally with much more space in them. Often you'll want to scroll down the inventory list to find more stuff, I've missed loads of stuff before because I haven't scrolled down!

Now you can get up.

Z goes prone, X sneaks around, C makes you sprint. Zombies have poor vision but good hearing, if you run around with C everywhere you will die. Most people use X nearly everywhere, C is good for the beach and forests I think. X still isn't a good enough sneak for towns, you'll want to double-tap Shift to make you walk. Double-tapping shift again reverts it back to sneak run.

Chat: The / key lets you chat. But you should cycle the channels with "," until it goes light blue, that's the channel everyone uses. There is also Direct Communication which is white which I'm pretty sure is vocal range but I haven't used it because I suck.

The best advice I can give is be very careful and conservative, trust absolutely no one and walk everywhere in town. If a zombie starts running at you then try to go indoors as they always walk indoors and it will buy you enough time to react. If it's night time and you can't see anything then use a flare but don't stand in the light as you'll probably get shot! If you find a rifle then be prepared that the sound of that shot will attract every zombie in a ten thousand mile radius.

You'll pick up most stuff as you go, have fun!

I kinda welcome new stuff, but as with any alpha. When you add or even fix 1 thing, 10 new issues pop up.

I did notice the game is running a LOT better last night. Zombies seemed a lot less glitchy, and when running didn't look like they were teleporting.
Also overall movement felt better and less laggy.


Dunno if you guys ever played Counter-Strike back when it was beta, it kinda reminds me of this game. First version of the game was pretty rough, with glitches and issues..and little by little things were fixed and even got broken. With time..stuff was fixed and it was a new game by the time they got into the later beta versions. It's kinda cool seeing how it's progressing. I already see them getting help from fans, as a few people have stepped up and even submited graphics and sounds to improve the game. I can only imagine this continue with them picking up better tallent to make the game even better. The game has them special feeling to it...it's going to be pretty big i think. We started playing this last week, and already the number of servers have trippled and the amount of posts on their forums is about 4 times the amount within a week.

So I came up with this idea for a thread today when I was searching for information regarding tents and vehicles in DayZ and I've noticed one thing - sure, the info is all there but it's scattered around the whole General Discussion. Considering it's easier and more conveniant to have everything in one place, especially for newbies, I thought this would be a good idea. This could be even stickied if there'll be enough info and the thread is actually worthwhile.

So far I've gathered:

Regarding tents:

- a tent requires 3 inventory slots to be carried
- it can be put into a backpack when you have it in your inventory
- it is movable after you set it up however you can't pick up someone's tent
- if you move a tent without taking the items they will appear in a big pile of loot nearby where the tent originally was
- tents can hold 50 items and 10 weapons in them (Binoculars and other tools count as weapons as well) and up to 5 backpacks
- for now you have to use the "Save" command from the mouse wheel menu in order to properly save a tent although there still is a 50% chance that a server will eat your tent no matter what
- tents are tied to servers and survive server restarts
- EVERYONE can take items out of your tent
- tents actually require a bit of space to be placed at (around 3x3m)
- tents disappear after 2 days when you died - you can make a new tent after your death or reclaim items from the existing one - you can't pack it up even if you are the owner

Regarding vehicles:

- the mythical Huey does in fact exist
- Huey takes 50 jerry cans to be fully refueled
- vehicles have different fuel capacities; when refueling, the vehicle's fuel quantity is read from config, and increased by 20L
- vehicles appear to be persistent after force saving with the "Save" command from mouse wheel menu however, just like with tents, there is a possibility of a server eating your vehicles along with all the items inside
- vehicles spawn on each server restart, they do not respawn however when destroyed or left somewhere
- all vehicles have storage in them (except bicycles). If you can't open it from outside, take a seat, open map, select Units and then Gear

How to repair a helicopter by Hei:

"When fixing a Huey, the only available chopper that I know of, you want to get into the pilot's seat and give a good look at the top left corner. You want everything to be green = fixed.
- First is hull, it needs scrap metal to fix. When you approach the chopper, it's called hull or body or something similar.
- Next comes the engine, you'll need engine parts to fix that. Again, should be self explanatory.
- Then you want to fix the MROT or the main rotor. For that you need to find the main rotor assembly. It's called main rotor in the menu.
- Afterwards comes the ATRQ, or the secondary rotor/vertical rotor. This is arguably the most important part to fix, for it counteracts the torque, stops it from spinning out of control. You need scrap metal to fix it. In the fixing menu, it's called the V rotor.
- Last but not least come the instruments, relatively important, depending on what difficulty level the server is in. It shows your speed, altitute, et cetera. It requires scrap metal to fix, and is called avionics(?) in the menu.

Next comes the refueling. Unlike cars which usually take 4 jerry cans to refuel to maximum, choppers require A LOT. 4 jerry cans is like a drop of piss for a chopper. I personally haven't counted, but my group easily needed more than twenty jerry cans to refuel a chopper, therefore you absolutely must bring it to a refueling point, to jerry fuel back and forth from a fuel tank, to the chopper.

That's all there is to it. Don't rely too much on the red/green text in the context menu, it's not always reliable. Always enter the pilot's seat and look at the top left for true chopper's condition."

How to get gear out of a vehicle when there is no "Gear" option in the context menu:

When that happens all you have to do is enter a vehicle, open your map, go to units, if you are not selected then select yourself, click on Gear on the right upper hand side under your nickname and you will be able to take whatever you want from a vehicle, even on the move. This works with all vehicles.

So tryed to leave airfield. No ammo. aggro'd 4 zombies. Got hit. Bled out while running like a madman towards cherno.

Made it to the little dock west of cherno and ran onto it. Zombies couldnt get me. Found an mp5 on dock killed zombies, bandaged myself.

Now i am at 2200blood no food no water 3 bullets left. Make my way into cherno towards church. Find a brick building west of church with jackpot of enfield and a 1911 with clips. Head into church 2 friendlies in there. they give me food and water and then the zombies start pouring in. 900 zombies on server. The zombies start flooding in the doors, we kill 5, 5 more show up. One of the friendlies gets hit and falls down. We manage to get the zombies cleared and bandage him up and then another wave comes in.

Right now i am at 36 zombie kills, 15 headshots. still at 2200blood, still passing out. Both friendlies died on last wave. How much longer can i survive? Time will tell.

I'm pretty sure I i know how some people get all these loots. My guess is they go to a place that has a decent amount of loot drops, like a army camp or a dear nest. Then they log on, clear out the loot and sign off and find a new server.

The new server will have new loot and most likely different items...and repeat....

I'm still alive after trying to get some blood last night for gravis. I got a bunch of barbed wired and kinda fensed myself in so zombies don't come running in..dunno if it stops people though.

So I'm camping out in the Church of ****** Cock, if you don't know what it is it's a small church located on the south coast of chernogorsk or however you spell it.

So I ran out to see if i could get some loot to respawn and 1 survivor runs in (I guess he saw me run out). So I wait a bit as it's always a bit interesting when meeting people in the game as you can't trust them. I guess I'm on a russian server, no one is speaking english so i can't even ask them if they are friendly... I'm waiting it out and 2 more people (bandits) run into the church....now I'm thinking there is going to be drama
but I don't hear any gun shots. They leave the door open and i can see them inside between the pews.... I guess looking for loot, but I had taken most of the stuff, leaving
some empty cans and ammo that I didn't need. I slowly creep up to the church door and kinda lean in to see them... I have a pretty good shot of them as they are standing still. I decide to take out the bandits first with 2 well placed shots that looked like headshots, but it didn't see to register as them... the guy for whatever reason
doesn't even notice. I quickly flank him from the left and take him out too.

So now there are 3 dead bodies, I go over the front of the church so i can keep an eye on the door and loot them. While doing this, another guy spawns in the church, and I take him out
with 1 shot to the head too. Lulz.

Pretty good small run...i got like 4 blood bags, a bunch of revolver ammo, food, trenching tool(not sure what that does), a tent, beans and water, and a bunch of bandges.
I was hoping for some ak rounds but they only had Winchesters and a m104 shotgun as their mains. The other 2 had handguns only.

lulz...the game is so intense as you really feel like there's a consequence to dying and as ammo is so scarce you need well placed shots.
